A Rich History of Château Lynch-Bages

The story of Château Lynch-Bages dates back to the 18th century when Irishman Thomas Lynch began producing exceptional wines under the name "Cru de Lynch." In 1934, Jean-Charles Cazes rented the estate from Felix de Vial and purchased it in 1938, renaming it Lynch-Bages. Since then, the Cazes family has continued to manage the winery, preserving its legacy. The estate features an old vat house, a rare remnant of traditional winemaking equipment in the Médoc region.

Fusion of Tradition and Modern Techniques

In the past, grapes were transported by horse-drawn carts and crushed in wooden tanks, with workers using a pulley system to remove the leftover skins. Today, while the old vat house is no longer in operation, Château Lynch-Bages combines time-honored methods with modern technology. This fusion allows for the production of exceptional wines while minimizing environmental impact, showcasing a commitment to sustainable winemaking practices.

Vineyards Ensuring Quality

Located in the heart of Médoc, Pauillac is renowned for its Grand Cru Classé wines since 1855. The wines from this appellation are celebrated for their rich, dense flavors and aromas that mature beautifully over time. At Lynch-Bages, the vineyards span 100 hectares, benefiting from a mild climate and diverse geology. Intensive soil analysis has determined the ideal planting ratios, ensuring that the unique characteristics of the land are fully expressed in each bottle.

Lynch-Bages wines are among the best in the world. On a par with top wines such as: Château Angélus Château Ausone Château Cheval Blanc Château Haut-Brion Château Lafite-Rothschild Château Latour Château Margaux Château la Mission Haut-brion Château Mouton Rothschild Château Pavie Château d'Yquem Pétrus Anyone who is near Pauillac should plan a visit to the winery. We have kept the vintages we tasted and photographed them. Enjoy!

We had the opportunity to visit the castle during the grape harvest. Everything is impressive, from the immensity of the premises (one of the largest wineries seen in Bordeaux) to the precision of the path of the grapes to the vats. The guide is great and explains very well the evolution of the castle over the years and all the work carried out, especially under the Cazes family. Very nice village square right next to the castle to see. The tasting ends this visit on a high note, with three good wines (among them a olmo fish, another family property).

Château Lynch-Bages offers an exceptional experience in the heart of Bordeaux's wine country. The visitor center is beautifully modern, creating a striking contrast with the traditional setting of Pauillac. The tour is thoroughly impressive, showcasing state-of-the-art winemaking facilities while also paying homage to the history of winemaking. We learned about both modern techniques and the old methods used by past merchants, and we were even able to view a fascinating collection of vintage winemaking equipment. The depth of information provided makes it a very enriching and informative tour. The wine tasting at the end was a fantastic highlight, where we sampled three of Lynch-Bages' distinguished wines: Ormes de Pez, ECHO, and Château Lynch-Bages. Each offered its own unique profile, giving us a wonderful sense of the estate’s range. The shop is also well-curated, making it easy to find a special bottle (or two!) to bring home. A visit here isn’t complete without stopping by Café Lavinal, the restaurant next door. It was one of the best meals of our entire trip, with outstanding food and ambiance. Overall, Château Lynch-Bages is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Bordeaux wine region.
