Pézenas, nestled between Pézenas and Roujan in the heart of the Occitanie region, boasts a rich history. Once a thriving Roman colony, it became a cultural hub during the Middle Ages, hosting some of Molière's most celebrated performances. Chateau-Montpezat, with roots dating back to the 16th century, has been producing exceptional wines in this historic area. Since 1988, the winery has committed to sustainable practices, avoiding synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers. This dedication has led to stabilized yields and a sulfite content well below regulatory limits.

The Terroir of Chateau-Montpezat

At Chateau-Montpezat, organic farming is key to maintaining a sustainable agricultural system and preserving biodiversity. The vineyard features two main soil types typical of the AOP Languedoc: terraces from the Villafranchian era and clay-limestone soils with gravelly sands. To minimize soil compaction and erosion, weeding is done sparingly using gentle hoeing techniques. Each year, an organic sheep herd grazes in the vineyards, enriching the soil with organic matter and enhancing microbial diversity.

Wine Culture and Vinification at Chateau-Montpezat

The winery prioritizes natural cultivation methods, using minimal intervention. The vines are pruned using Guyot (young wood) and Royat (old wood) techniques, resulting in modest yields that are half of what the appellation allows. This approach ensures the production of high-quality, disease-resistant grapes. Vinification occurs in the domaine's cellar, where organic methods eliminate the need for synthetic corrections. Following biodynamic principles, the vineyard schedules rackings during the waning moon and finings and blendings during the rising moon, ensuring a harmonious winemaking process.

We called and left a voice message in English to come and taste some wine. Within an hour we had a call back from the owners inviting us to come to their home for wine tasting. Very beautiful chateau and extremely friendly owners and their cute dog. The wine was excellent and varies from £12-17 per bottle. I can not recommend enough!!

Great! Christophe really took the time for us while he was quite busy with the new harvest. We called one hour before the visit. Google maps took us on a small detour when we were pretty close to the castle but we made it by going straight and by not leaving the ‘main’ road.

What a welcome, a real joy. A moment of sharing with people who live their passion for wine with heart. I discovered wines of high quality that are in no way inferior to some so-called Grand Crus. See you soon. Good luck with the harvest. Visit on 07/09/23 around 5 p.m. Lyonnais from Marseillan 😉

So what can we say about this area other than that it's very pretty and quite atypical? The owners are hospitable and passionate about their wines and the (eco-friendly) way they produce them. We go there regularly with our wine-loving friends. The selection is diverse. The only downside was that we had quite a few corked bottles on our last visit. I didn't have the courage to bring them back. That won't stop me from coming back! A lovely address.

We spontaneously visited this wine yard with the hopes for a tasting. We arrived quite late in the evening but they welcomed us anyway! We had a great experience and we’re happy that they could accommodate with such short notice! Really nice wine and really interesting to use sheep to clear the ground around the vines. Would definitely visit again!

We discovered this winery near Pezenas during a visit to the region and were delighted with the organic wine. The owners Christophe and Laurence are very friendly, real wine artisans. They let us taste wines from different ranges and they were all great, each with its own characteristics. I highly recommend it!
