Celebrating 400 Years of Winemaking Tradition
Land Perfect for Vines
The Massif de la Malepère is a picturesque region shaped like a triangle, with Carcassonne, Limoux, and Castelnaudary at its corners. This appellation encompasses 31 municipalities, collectively producing a remarkable variety of wines. Nestled in the northeastern part of this massif, Château de Cointes benefits from a unique climate influenced by both oceanic and Mediterranean elements. The vineyard's south-facing slope features gravelly soil at the top, transitioning to clay-limestone at the bottom. This diverse soil composition, combined with favorable geological and climatic conditions, has fostered a thriving vineyard, rooted in a long-standing family passion for winemaking.
A Rich Family Heritage
The history of Château de Cointes dates back to 1646 when André and Jean Cointes first established the estate and began producing wine. In 1987, François and Anne Gorostis took over from François’ grandparents, Paul and Clémence, continuing the family legacy. Under their stewardship, the winery has embraced innovation while honoring tradition. In 1923, François’ grandfather expanded the estate's production, gradually introducing Mediterranean and Bordeaux grape varieties. Today, half of the winery's output is sold to local wine merchants, while the other half is exported to Northern Europe and Asia, showcasing the quality and appeal of Cointes wines.
