Celebrating Four Generations of Artisan Winemaking
A Rich Heritage of Winemaking
Domaine Cazes has been crafting exceptional wines since 1955, but its roots trace back to 1895 when Michel Cazes founded the winery in Rivesaltes, nestled between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The winery expanded in 1927 when Michel’s son, Aimé, encouraged the purchase of a neighboring farmhouse. Over the decades, the estate grew to encompass 40 hectares by the 1950s, and it transitioned to organic practices in the late 1990s.
Vineyards That Reflect Terroir
Known for its innovative spirit, Domaine Cazes continually adapts to modern techniques while honoring traditional methods. The dedicated team works diligently to cultivate the unique terroirs, resulting in wines that have earned over 400 medals since 1960. The estate spans 220 hectares in the Agly Valley, where the clay-limestone soil, enriched with schist and siliceous pebbles, contributes to the production of fine wines. Today, all vineyards are fully organic and biodynamic.
Pioneering Biodynamic Practices
For the past two decades, Domaine Cazes has embraced biodynamic principles, positioning itself as a leader in sustainable winemaking in France. This approach fosters harmony among grape varieties, climate, flora, fauna, and the people involved in the process. The vineyards are treated as living ecosystems, with practices designed to enhance their balance and resilience. Nesting boxes for bats and insectivorous birds help manage pests naturally, while a compost pit recycles organic waste into fertilizers.
A visit to Domaine Cazes offers a unique opportunity to appreciate its wines and the welcoming atmosphere. Guests can enjoy tastings led by knowledgeable wine experts, showcasing the diversity and richness of Cazes wines. The cellar visit reveals the dedication and passion behind each bottle, with the aroma of aging wines creating a memorable experience.
