The Unique Terroir of Roussillon's Domaine des Schistes
Domaine des Schistes: A Renowned Winery in Roussillon
Domaine des Schistes has a rich history that dates back to 1906. Owned by Jacques Sires, the winery is now managed by his son Mickaël. Nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees, it is conveniently located near the charming villages of Estagel, Tautavel, and Maury. The Roussillon region, shaped like an amphitheater, opens to the Mediterranean Sea to the east, with the Corbières mountains to the north and the Pyrenees to the south. Vine cultivation in this area has ancient roots, with evidence of winemaking dating back to Greek times. The first wines from Domaine des Schistes were produced in the 1989 vintage.
The Terroir of Domaine des Schistes
The unique combination of diverse soils, ample sunlight, and a favorable microclimate contributes to the winery's wide range of wines. Spanning 50 hectares between Tautavel and Estagel, the vineyard benefits from a climate characterized by dry summers and rainy autumns and springs. The region enjoys high sun exposure during the growing season, while local winds, such as the hot and dry “Tramontane” and the humid “Marinade” from the sea, play a significant role in the vineyard's health. The winery cultivates several grape varieties, including Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Vermentino, Syrah, and Macabeu, using traditional vinification methods.
