Domaine des Schistes: A Great Winery in the Roussillon

The history of Domaine des Schistes dates back to 1906. The winery is the property of Jacques Sires and his son Mickaël now runs it. It is located at the foothills of the Pyrenees, close to the villages of Estagel, Tautavel and Maury. The Roussillon region is naturally shaped as an amphitheater open to the Mediterranean sea to the east, the Corbières mountains lie in the north and the Pyrenees to the south. Vinegrowing in the area is millenary, the first traces of culture go back to ancient Greece. The Domaine des Schistes has been making wine for several generations now. The first wines of Domaine des Schistes were harvested in the vintage 1989.

The Terroir of Domaine des Schistes

The diversity of soil, sun exposure, and microclimate helps producing a wide range of wines. Domaine des Schistes grows 50 hectares of vine between Tautavel and Estagel. The climate of Roussillon is made of dry summers and rainy seasons in autumn and spring. Sun exposure is high in spring and summer. The vineyard is swept by many winds, mainly the local “Tramontane”, hot and dry from the inlands, and “Marinade”, more humid, from the sea. The winery grows Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, Vermentino, Syrah and Macabeu. Domaine des Schistes follows traditional methods for vinification.
