The Innovative La Prova Winery

Founded in 2008 by winemaker Sam Scott, La Prova Wines represents the culmination of over 20 years of experience in South Australia and abroad. Sam's passion for Italian grape varieties led him to believe that Australia, particularly the Adelaide Hills, is an ideal location for cultivating these unique grapes. La Prova is a pioneering winery that combines traditional Italian varietals with the ancient soils of Australia, producing wines that are not only sustainable but also resilient to climate change. Each grape variety is carefully selected and grown in the most suitable locations, ensuring that they thrive in the Adelaide Hills and surrounding regions.

Adelaide Hills Terroir

Located in the Adelaide Plains of South Australia, the Adelaide Hills region boasts an average rainfall of about 600mm and temperatures ranging from 16 to 22 degrees Celsius. This Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters, creates one of the most fertile areas in Australia. The predominant soil type is red clay loam, complemented by sandstone outcrops and patches of black earth, providing an excellent foundation for grape growing.

Winemaking Philosophy

At La Prova, the winemaking process emphasizes meticulous vineyard management and a precise picking schedule. The philosophy is simple: the best wines are made on the day the grapes are harvested. The winery sources fruit from vineyards that are best suited for each grape variety, primarily in the Adelaide Hills, but also from regions like King Valley for Prosecco and McLaren Vale for Nero d'Avola. This careful selection ensures that each wine reflects the unique characteristics of its origin.

My friend and I were at the Easter Markets and decided to stop in for a platter and wine. They advised the platter was not available because of the weekend but we were more than welcome to bring food from the markets to the restaurant. The wine tasting was one of the best we have tried in Adelaide! Liam was great and very engaging and friendly. Would highly recommend stopping here for something more intimate and they have fantastic wines!

La Prova was probably my best experience in South Australia - and to think we stumbled upon it on accident! We were traveling from Melbourne to South Australia and were recommended it when in Adelaide. Visiting Hahndorf - and not thinking anything of it - we passed by and luckily enough they were open! (They are only opened the first weekend of the month.) We went in and despite not having a booking, we were sat and accommodated perfectly. I really suggest booking as the place was full! The decor was cute and I felt cozy the moment I walked in. They were making hand-made pizzas that looked amazing but we were too full so just opted for the basic tasting with some chèvre cheese and crackers. We all ordered a wine flight of red Italian wines and every wine was different from one another and delicious. Many times reds can start tasting similar in a tasting but every wine stood out from one another. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We were sat at a long "family style" shared table and had a great conversation with the people sat with us. It was a really special afternoon and I would recommend this place to anybody stopping in Hahndorf or even the Adelaide Hills area in general. Well worth it! It's a hidden gem.
