The Story of Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole's story began in 1983 when Eugenio Campolmi acquired his first plots along Via Bolgherese, planting 4 hectares of vineyards. The winery's first wine, Paleo Rosso, was released in 1987, followed by Paleo Bianco in 1989. As the winery grew, so did its selection of grape varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah. A significant milestone occurred in 2002 when Le Macchiole transitioned to organic viticulture, and by 2010, biodynamic practices were introduced, enhancing the quality of their wines.

The Historical Vineyards of Le Macchiole

At Le Macchiole, the vineyards are the heart of winemaking. The winery spans 64 acres, featuring meticulously selected plots that yield exceptional grapes. Each vineyard is treated as a unique entity, allowing the team to craft wines that reflect the distinct characteristics of the land. Their commitment to precision is evident in their manual harvesting and careful sorting processes, ensuring that only the finest grapes make it to the cellar.

The Territory of the Winery

Located on the Etruscan Coast, Bolgheri is a stunning region where Le Macchiole has cultivated vines since 1983. This area, once overlooked, has become a key player in the Tuscan and Italian wine landscape. The Mediterranean climate, combined with diverse soil types—27 have been identified—creates ideal conditions for producing elegant wines with excellent aging potential. The clayey, sandy soils provide a rich mineral foundation, contributing to the unique flavor profiles of Le Macchiole's wines.

I asked a sommelier what he thought of the famous and expensive M. Di Bolgheri... he told me: "very good but the real ecstasy, I tried it with other wines.." Well gentlemen, this Bolgheri red is one of those... A company that is therefore equally committed and that, out of love for its land, loves us all. Highly recommended.

Very interesting winery, definetely worth visiting. The winery itself is a piece of art both in production process and exterior/interior design by one of well-known Italian street-artist. Wine tasting (4 wines) literally shows the whole history of the winery and passion for winemaking in 4 glasses. For us it was a unique experience - much more interesting if compared to visiting some other 'grand' Italian wineries

Historic and reference company for the Tuscan Bolgheri panorama from the 70s and 80s, one of the first five companies to focus on the territory according to the will of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, still family-owned today. Fine wines in a range that expresses the non-conformist philosophy. Products that underline the expressiveness linked to the heterogeneity of the territory through the vines (once considered international) now considered native. From the white Paleo made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, rich and with a dynamic sip given by acidity and salinity, to the corporate core Bolgheri Rosso Doc which includes all the dark grapes grown by the company, up to the red Paleo, today composed exclusively of Cabernet Franc, which indicates the potential for development with a dense tannic structure that still needs to be integrated; and to conclude the Messorio, 100% Merlot, a strong quality that is expressed by the satisfying entry into the sip which then leaves the palate fresh, harmonious and effervescent, reminiscent of blood oranges, all united by the File Rouge which recalls the Mediterranean scrub. Finally, they produce a pure Syrah, about three thousand bottles of this wine whose name derives from the local dialect “Scrio” which recalls a bit the vine that gives life to the wine in question. A landscape that develops mainly in the plain but has a pleasant charm. Company surrounded by vineyards, careful attention to 360-degree cleanliness, great precision and order in the cellar where steel, ceramic amphorae, porcelain stoneware, cement and wood of various kinds are used as containers. In conclusion, I would like to say that it is a company oriented towards constant experimentation and production improvement. The structure is very minimalist and at the same time refined and fascinating, with an exceptional welcome and hospitality. Congratulations Eleonora for introducing me to the world of Le Macchiole. Thank you Cinzia Merli for your kind availability. I highly recommend a visit here and will be happy to return.

We booked a private tour with a tasting of 3 wines. Eleonora welcomed us very warmly and gave us an entertaining and informative tour. During the tasting we were able to taste the classic Bolgheri Rosso as well as the Paleo and Messorio. We really enjoyed the tour and the tasting.

private tour but felt that it was not very personal or enthusiastic. the tour coverage was also quite limited and we did not really see that much of stuff. it was just the guide talking in general. felt that more can be provided or can charge a lower price or just guide us straight to tasting if the main areas are under construction. wines were amazing just that i prefer other tours for the price im paying. sorry.

The staff was very friendly, and the tour seemed to be quite nice and personal. The winery is much smaller than its neighbours, and there are no any kinds of architectural or artistic wonders, but it's still a beautiful place. It was also interesting to discuss their biodynamic approaches. The wine tasting was amazing due to the added feature of Messorio vertical. It definitely worth it as the wines are indeed incredible!

For those who have had the immense fortune of tasting Eugenio's old wines, they will still have in their palate and mind, engraved in everlasting memory, one of the greatest expressions of what can be born, if carefully followed and vinified, wines of these lands. Signora Cinzia continues the difficult path undertaken years ago by an Italian genius of wine, who passed away too, too soon. To yours Eugenio
