Small sustainable family winery making wines using exclusive homegrown grapes

Messnerhof- Family Winery Producing Excellent Wines

Messnerhof is a small family winery in which three generations share their love and passion for winemaking and experience new things every day. Bernhard Pichler’s aim is to exclusively grow the types of grape and produce the kinds of wine that yield best and original quality under the natural conditions.

Winery Using Home-Grown Grapes

The wine is made directly on the farm, under careful conditions, and exclusively using home-grown grapes. Depending on the type of wine, it is either made in high-grade steel or wooden barrels. It is one of Bernhard Pichler’s main priorities to produce wine with a strong character that remains true to its type, location, and year. The vinification of grapes and the bottling and storage, everything takes place at their St. Peter headquarters.

Their Vineyards and the Grape Varieties

The winery estate has 2.8 hectares of estate vineyards, and three vineyards are right next to the Bolzano area where wine has been produced for 2500 years. The east-facing vineyards have a loamy soil with limestone that is rich in minerals and has a high water retention capacity. The temperature varies a lot between day and night, and the region is close to the Mendelkamm.

The grape varietals that grow in their estate include Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Schiava, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. The best grapes are used to make their red, white, rose, and dessert wines. In the wine cellar, fermentation and ageing of wines take place in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels.

There is very low use of sulfurs or any other chemicals which help to preserve the natural, fruity taste of the wines.
