Messnerhof: A Family Tradition in Winemaking

Messnerhof is a charming family winery in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy, where three generations of the Pichler family share their passion for winemaking. Led by Bernhard Pichler, the winery focuses on cultivating grape varieties that thrive in their unique environment, producing wines that reflect the essence of their terroir.

Crafting Wine from Homegrown Grapes

At Messnerhof, every bottle of wine is crafted on-site using grapes grown exclusively on their estate. The winemaking process is meticulous, with fermentation occurring in high-quality stainless steel tanks or traditional wooden barrels. Bernhard prioritizes creating wines with a distinct character that authentically represent their origin and vintage. All stages of production, from vinification to bottling, take place at their headquarters in St. Peter.

Vineyards and Grape Varieties

The winery spans 2.8 hectares of vineyards located near Bolzano, an area with a winemaking history of over 2,500 years. The east-facing vineyards benefit from loamy, mineral-rich soil that retains moisture well, while the temperature fluctuations between day and night enhance grape quality.

Messnerhof cultivates a diverse range of grape varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Schiava, Lagrein, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, and Syrah. These grapes are used to produce an array of wines, from reds and whites to rosés and dessert wines. The winery employs minimal sulfurs and chemicals, preserving the natural, fruity flavors of their wines.

We just had a wonderful tour of the Messnerhof Winery in Bolzano. Bernhard, the owner is extremely knowledgeable and charismatic. The winery itself is very beautiful, so is the wine room. The wines are delicious with different grapes, character and flavors. This is a labor of love and passion, and is reflected through the winery and wines.

A beautiful, small, fine winery with excellent wines. Great, personal tour from the winemaker through the vineyards and the cellar with a very delicious tasting! Plus the magically beautiful view into the distance - a place absolutely worth visiting & definitely come with an empty trunk 😉

The very high-quality and beautiful holiday apartment is located in the middle of the vineyards with a wonderful view, directly below the church of St. Peter. Several hiking trails pass by nearby, it is a 20-minute walk to the center of Bolzano along the Talfer through a park and bus number 12 makes the return journey easier. The Pichler family's wines are wonderful, the Pichlers themselves are very friendly and helpful. We have been here twice and will definitely come back.

We did a road trip from Garmisch down to Bozen due to rain all day. Looked up local Wineries in that area and liked the reviews for Messnerhof Winery, so we picked that location to explore. Upon arrival we called the number and Bernhard answered the phone. We told him we were at the gate and he stated he would be there in about 5 mins. He was out in the vineyards harvesting. We did the wine tasting and all the wines were outstanding. We purchased several bottles to take back with us to the U.S. Wished we could of taken back several cases of his wines. Recommend this place to all that are exploring wineries in the areas. Great location and Bernhard was outstanding. We took the goat trail route (back way) back to Garmisch which had some great scenery even with the cold rain.

A little but unexpected visit, also for the owner when we called him on the middle of the day for a winetasting, but absolutely a great winetasting with beautiful wines.

The apartment is beautiful and equipped with every comfort, quiet and located on the hills among vineyards with a splendid panoramic view. Do not underestimate the proximity to the center of Bolzano, which can be reached with a pleasant walk. Mr. Pilcher is always available and smiling... I returned twice precisely because I had very pleasant memories of the first stay which I confirmed after the second visit!
