WASSMANN. Handcrafted, natural wines

Our south-facing vineyards lie in the Villány wine-region, the southernmost Hungarian wine-growing area and the most significant one to produce red wine in the country.

Our 100 years old traditional cellar is situated in Pécsdevecser, an old, small village with only 70 habitants.

The Story of the Winery

We founded our wine-estate in 1998 and have been running it together – only two of us - since then. (We = Ralf Waßmann, who studied beverage sciences in Geisenheim (Germany) and Susann Hanauer, who was a lawyer).

We have an exciting story, we emigrated from Germany in 1998 just to finally be able to found our own organic wine estate.And our wine region Villány itself has an exciting history too, it was world-famous before the world wars, has been waiting for its rediscovery since the fall of the wall and is still an insider tip in western Europe. In addition, European viticulture was saved here from phylloxera, because this is where Teleki Zsigmond lived, who was the first to successfully graft vines on American roots.

The Lands

Our vineyards cover only 1.5 hectares. In 2003 our business became the first one in Villány to be recognized as organic wine growers, according to the EU guidelines for ecological agriculture.

We have had DEMETER certification since 2011.

The Wines

All of our wines are absolutely handcrafted, unfined, and unfiltered and only sulfurized as much as is absolutely necessary to maintain the fruity, elegant character of the wines. If possible we do not sulfur at all. And we do not use any other substances or additives.

Wines Recognized for their Taste

Our wines are exclusive and have the best references. Our wines are listed in all Budapest Michelin star restaurants and in the Berlin two-star restaurant Horváth.In the Gault & Millau Hungary Wine Guide we are described as follows:"The first organic wine estate in Villány was founded by Susann Hanauer and Ralf Waßmann from Germany.
