The World’s Smallest Sherry Winery in Andalusia
SANTA PETRONILA WINERY: THE SMALLEST SHERRY WINERY IN THE WORLD
“Vineyard facing west, in the Valley of Macharnudo. Occupying the beginning of a slope to the top of a gentle hill. On the slope, part of the marshland, floodplain forming the beards of what was at the beginning of our Era, the Ligustino Lake. This situation allows it to have a subsoil with saline water currents, despite being today 12 km from the Atlantic coast. The root system of the vitis-vinifera allows it to draw on this water reserve and produce fruits with a notable vegetative balance whose resulting wine is very unique. Born, produced and raised in the marine subsoil of the Viña Santa Petronila” Rafael García Gómez, winemaker
Rich History and Unique Terroir
Over two thousand years ago, the Guadalquivir and Guadalete rivers converged, creating the Eritía Island in the Tartessian Gulf, where Lake Ligustino once thrived. The Macharnudo Valley, with its fine albariza soil, emerged from the depths, enriched by centuries of marine sediment. Today, these saline currents continue to flow through the valley, imparting a distinctive character to the grapes of Santa Petronila.
Ideal Growing Conditions
The combination of historical significance, proximity to the sea, and a favorable climate creates an ideal environment for the vines at Santa Petronila. Surrounded by lush vineyards and cypress trees, the vines thrive, producing wines that evolve and improve with each vintage.
Signature Sherry Wines
At Santa Petronila, the vineyard takes center stage. The Palomino grapes, sourced from ancient vines in the Macharnudo Bajo Estate, absorb the unique qualities of the albariza soil. The winemaking process involves carefully blending in “the mothers” (old reserve Sherry wine) to enhance the wine's character. Each bottle reflects the dedication and craftsmanship that goes into creating this artisanal Sherry, offering a true taste of the region.
