A unique location where terroir, origin, and flavor all come together to create an exquisite lifestyle
In addition to being a part of the 46 000-hectare Nuwejaar Wetlands Special Management area, a natural reserve with an abundance of birds, plants, and wildlife, Zoetendal Vineyards, and River Estate is located on the banks of the Nuwejaars River. Since it was first established a few centuries ago, it has been a biosphere of Great Beauty. The estate's 15 hectares of vines create exceptional boutique wines with top notes that are inspired by their equally exceptional terroir. Indeed, under the guidance of knowledgeable vintners like Charles Hopkins of De Grendel, varietals and wines from the Zoetendal estate have been utilized to create award-winning vintages.
A World of Wines and Vines
In an area shaken by south-easterly winds and anchored in sturdy koffieklip soil, the pioneering vintners who were ready to risk all to cultivate vines at their limit are embodied in Zoetendal estate. They are also brave and resilient. Only those with the strength to cultivate vines in challenging conditions will enjoy the benefits. Stressed vines, miraculously, yield far more appetizing fruit and, as a result, much richer wines. One is of Dutch descent, while the other is a Venda Royal family member. Both provide the newly designed Zoetendal estate with a cultural dimension.
A look at viticulture and a terroir story
While the Elim region is widely recognized for its koffieklip soil and sharp coastal breezes, it is challenging to cultivate grapes there. The "strong in adversity" attitude has contributed to the peculiar flavor and superior quality of the wines produced in this region. The concept of terroir is crucial to the plot. The delicious and vegetal aromas of Elim grapes are influenced by the soil's composition, which includes koffieklip, shale, granite, and quartzite, as well as the winds and temperature. Terroir and taste go hand in hand, particularly when it comes to soil terroir. In the iron-rich clay that makes up the distinctive koffieklip soil, tiny stones have been bonded together. The extraordinary water retention and drainage of this soil are all essential for the establishment of strong vines.
