In addition to being a part of the 46 000-hectare Nuwejaar Wetlands Special Management area, a natural reserve with an abundance of birds, plants, and wildlife, Zoetendal Vineyards, and River Estate is located on the banks of the Nuwejaars River. Since it was first established a few centuries ago, it has been a biosphere of Great Beauty. The estate's 15 hectares of vines create exceptional boutique wines with top notes that are inspired by their equally exceptional terroir. Indeed, under the guidance of knowledgeable vintners like Charles Hopkins of De Grendel, varietals and wines from the Zoetendal estate have been utilized to create award-winning vintages.

A World of Wines and Vines

In an area shaken by south-easterly winds and anchored in sturdy koffieklip soil, the pioneering vintners who were ready to risk all to cultivate vines at their limit are embodied in Zoetendal estate. They are also brave and resilient. Only those with the strength to cultivate vines in challenging conditions will enjoy the benefits. Stressed vines, miraculously, yield far more appetizing fruit and, as a result, much richer wines. One is of Dutch descent, while the other is a Venda Royal family member. Both provide the newly designed Zoetendal estate with a cultural dimension.

A look at viticulture and a terroir story

While the Elim region is widely recognized for its koffieklip soil and sharp coastal breezes, it is challenging to cultivate grapes there. The "strong in adversity" attitude has contributed to the peculiar flavor and superior quality of the wines produced in this region. The concept of terroir is crucial to the plot. The delicious and vegetal aromas of Elim grapes are influenced by the soil's composition, which includes koffieklip, shale, granite, and quartzite, as well as the winds and temperature. Terroir and taste go hand in hand, particularly when it comes to soil terroir. In the iron-rich clay that makes up the distinctive koffieklip soil, tiny stones have been bonded together. The extraordinary water retention and drainage of this soil are all essential for the establishment of strong vines.

Tried this place on the off chance on a Sunday and they were open ! The four of us had a lovely wine tasting experience with a delicious cheese board (which I would highly recommend) . Their Sauvignon Blanc is a winner and they have a red there that is R450 a bottle but it’s quite something and will leave you wanting more. A love lady served us and made us few right at home.

The manager and staff are absolutely amazing and takes good care of the human factor when it comes to their service. We will drive back from Strand Helderberg again too Elim/Bredarsdorp to visit this absolute Gem.

A wonderful afternoon spent enjoying the food and wine tasting of this little gem. Between Elim (3km outside) and Bredasdorp, this remote but spectacular setting is a definite must if you are in the Agulas area and looking for a wonderful wine tasting experience. The drive (we approached from Pearly Beach) is really beautiful. Once there, Keenan and his team were very attentive to our needs and demonstrated the quality and friendliness of service in the area. The current menu offering includes a breakfast and lunch option (limited but varied). The wine tasting was very good and I recommend the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc limited edition and the 2017 The Monarch (if still available). We took more than a few bottles home. We will be back!

Friendly welcome. Stunning views of vineyards. Offered us water as we entered, for the table. We had wine tasters and ordered some food. Delicious sauce with my calamari. When asked for bill was surprised at the hefty price for 1litre of water @ R52. Just a normal bottled company water.
