History of Mendocino County Wine

"Mendocino" means "middle son," which is associated with the family name of Mendoza. The name originated from an explorer named Lorenzo Suárez de Mendoza. In the 1850s, farmers left their farms in Mendocino when they failed to find their financial success in the Gold Rush. Those who came back with cash began planting grapes and made a very fortunate decision that transformed into vineyards that are still thriving today. Wineries in the United States were not common until Prohibition was put into effect. But now there are numerous large-scale winery operations around the country, proving that these industries are viable today.
