Where is the Mittelburgenland Wine Region

Mittelburgenland wine region is in the central part of Burgenland, on the east border of Austria with Hungary.

History of Mittelburgenland Wine

For the late 1970s and early 1980s, this area was some of the first in Austria to produce red wines with a regional identity. Blaufränkisch remains true to this day in the continued upswing. With Blaufränkisch vine it has been possible to make a red wine that is distinct in its character, typical of the region, and was granted DAC status in 2005 on three levels- Mittelburgenland DAC , Mittelburgenland DAC with vineyard (Ried) designation and Mittelburgenland DAC Reserve.

Terrior of Mittelburgenland

With hot, sunny and dry weather, this part of Austria has a continental climate which is very pleasant contrast to the country's alpine climate. Hills in the northwest and south keep winds coming from the Austrian alpine foothills at bay.Instead of the harsh continental east winds, mild and dry Pannonian winds are common in the region. These are great for the ripening grapes since they prefer to be later on in ripening. Mittelburgenland's landscape gently undulates, and is covered in pockets of dense forest. The clay-dominated soil means the water can be retained for the vines over any dry summers. The Mittelburgenland soil, or terroir, often gets attributed to the minerality and structure in the red wine in this region. Blaufränkisch vines thrive in these soils. Consequently, the wines here have plenty of fruit concentration and varietal character.

Mittelburgenland Wine Characteristics

Mittelburgenland is known as Austria's top red wine region, and the primary varietals here are Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt. Many of the wineries in the region have adopted a style of architecture that some have labeled "Wine Architecture," which is truly distinctive and will make any visit noteworthy. Mittelburgenland is a regionally distinct wine that can be found in a lot of Austrian vineyards. This particular variety has an intense, dark ruby-red color, and its complex bouquet smells of blackberries, dark cherries and blueberries. A hint of spicy notes completes this.
