Vienna adores its wine and the customs associated with it. The tranquil, scenic neighborhood of Neustift am Walde is one of the city's best examples of Vienna's lasting passion for wine and beer. Neustift am Walde, located near the Höhenstrasse, Vienna's picturesque Wienerwald road, and bordering the western edges of the 18th and 19th districts, has a genuine rural atmosphere while being far inside the city limits. Its modest bounds are only the beginning of its rustic elegance, which is almost time-frozen. Neustift am Walde, situated amidst some of the most picturesque vineyards in the area, transforms into a delightful time capsule of old Vienna during the summer months, when it is much quieter.

A wine-growing town with a long history, Neustift am Walde was first recorded in writing in 1330 and is situated between Dreimarkstein and Michaelerberg. Neustift am Walde, also known as Neistift aum Woid in Central Bavaria, was a separate municipality outside Vienna, Austria, until 1892. It is now a part of Döbling, Vienna's 19th district. It belongs to the group of 89 katastralgemeinden.
The name Neustift occurs in an official document for the first time in 1330. The history of Neustift am Walde can be traced back to the 13th century and can be considered the first pioneer wine-producing region in Austria. There are many vineyards in this area that produce world-class wines that are highly sought after due to their great quality and also because of the region's rich history. Nowadays, Neustift am Walde is popular for its numerous Heurige (restaurants selling locally produced wine).
Austria’s quintessential style is set apart from the rest due to its soil types, the selection of grape varieties grown, and the specific production methods of winemakers in the area. These elements produce a style of wine found nowhere else in Vienna or the world for that matter. The traditional mixed set, in which many grape varieties are planted together in the vineyard, is practically unheard of nowadays. These grapes are then harvested and made into wine at the same time.
Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Roter Muskateller, Chardonnay, Traminery, Sauvignon Blanc, Neuburger, St. Laurent, Blaudrankisch, Blauburger, Zweigelt, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are just a few of the varieties of grapes that are nurtured to perfection in these vineyards. The excellence of the region's grapes, along with the expertise and management supplied by families who have owned the vineyards for centuries, is credited with their success.
Neustift am Walde wines have traditionally been made for immediate consumption, rather than for cellaring. A handful of wineries are now producing well-structured, age-worthy Gruner Veltliner, however, some of which are beginning to enjoy minor cult status. Aside from Gruner Veltliner and those already mentioned, common varieties in the vineyards include Welschriesling, Zweigelt, and Pinot Noir, which are used to produce high-quality wines in Neustift Am Walde.

Schwarzenbergpark is a perfect spot for a postprandial stroll after the Heurige. More than 190 acres and extending into the Wienerwald, it is one of the more pristine areas within the city limits. The Schwarzenberg Park was originally owned by Count Lacy and was the first landscape garden in Austria. Today, it enchants with all its historically preserved park areas.
Neustift’s cemetery is also a fascinating place, with long rows of beautiful headstones where Viennese dignitaries like Nobel laureate Friedrich August von Hayek rest overlooking the city.
Located right in the center of the Grätzl is the Neustifter Pfarrkirche, the parish church, a charming baroque chapel, originally donated by the Italian merchant Marco Abundio in 1713. Rising above the quiet alleys and courtyards, it sets the tone for the Grätzl – and, acknowledging the ex-pats nearby, holds an English-language mass each Sunday.
