Winery of the Week: Boyd’s Cardinal Hollow Winery

A Vibrant Gem of Winemaking in the USA

Welcome to Boyd’s Cardinal Hollow Winery – a woman-owned small business rooted in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just north of Philadelphia. Founded in 2006 by Carolyn and Christopher Boyd, Cardinal Hollow began as a basement hobby that quickly grew into a flourishing winery celebrated for its creativity and community spirit.

The Boyd family’s journey started in their home basement, where over 3,000 gallons of wine fermented before making the leap to become an official licensed winery. Sales began from a small carriage house in North Wales Borough, but as demand increased, they moved to a larger 2,000-square-foot warehouse. It was here that Cardinal Hollow made history with the creation of the first-ever Jalapeño Wine – crafted from 100% peppers and no grapes – winning silver medals in both California and Pennsylvania. Today, many imitate this style, but none rival the original.

Eventually, the winery moved to its current location in West Point (Lansdale), where production expanded to over 30 wine varieties. This lively venue includes a full bar serving local beers and liquors, plus an event calendar packed with Dueling Pianos, Comedy Nights, Drag Shows, specialty dinner nights, bridal showers, and more. A covered outdoor Tiki bar adds to the festive atmosphere during good weather, creating a welcoming place for both locals and visitors.

Cardinal Hollow is best known for its award-winning Whiskey Mead, made from 100% Pennsylvania wildflower honey aged in Kentucky whiskey barrels for over a year. This rich, smooth mead pairs perfectly with BBQ and is their top seller. They also offer a variety of all-natural fruit wines like strawberry, pear, peach, and more, free of preservatives and bursting with fresh fruit flavor. Plus, a full range of red, white, and port wines rounds out their diverse selection.

The tasting room is open daily from noon to 6 pm, with satellite locations in Delaware Water Gap and Benton, PA. Cardinal Hollow also operates three mobile trailers serving frozen margaritas and other drinks at local events. For innovative wines, award-winning mead, and lively events, Boyd’s Cardinal Hollow Winery is a true example of American winemaking passion.
