The Unique Landscape of Priorat

In the rugged terrain of Priorat, the struggle for vine survival creates a captivating atmosphere for nature and wine enthusiasts. Here, terraces rich in llicorella, a distinctive slate stone, are nestled between Gratallops and Poboleda, surrounded by the iconic Priorat mountains. This region is home to older vines of Carinyena and Garnatxa, traditional varieties that thrive alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which have adapted well to the area's arid climate and unique soil composition.

Commitment to Organic Practices

At Gratavinum, we prioritize environmental respect and biodiversity in our vineyard management. Our commitment to organic farming means we avoid pesticides and herbicides, opting instead for natural solutions. We use sulfur dust to combat powdery mildew, Bordeaux mixture for mildew prevention, and Bacillus thuringiensis to manage pest issues. By not irrigating our vines, we encourage deep root growth, allowing them to withstand droughts and enhance the flavors derived from the soil. This approach ensures that our grapes reach optimal quality for winemaking.

Not being a wine person, what I can only say is the tour was great, our host David was super friendly, informative and was a native English speaker. You can tour inside the vineyards and learn, see the process in different rooms, then try the wines in the cute lab/kitchen. Nice experience.

A very rewarding and educational experience. Our host Jordi explained to us both the historical part of Priorat and the history of the winery and the production and history of its wines. We took a guided tour of the winery where we saw the fermentation tanks, amphorae, barrels and large bottles for fermentation, aging and conservation of the wine, with a detailed explanation from Jordi. We were lucky enough to agree that they had collected a small amount of grapes that they had prepared to start fermentation and we could see that the grapes are smaller and rarer due to this year's drought. He also showed us the machinery for destemming the grapes, as they usually only do the fermentation with the grapes without the stem. We were also able to visit the mill where he showed us how a great oil is made there. Both products are totally organic and ecological, with minimal intervention. Very attentive to our questions and doubts at all times. Then we tasted 4 of their wines and also the oil. It's a small family winery but it's very interesting how they make their wine. It was a great visit, very pleasant and welcoming. Thank you for checking us out so often. Highly recommended.

Our visit to Gratavinum was great! The experience surpassed our expectations and was incredibly informative. David was our host and he did a great job at talking about the wines and olive oil, the land and production process, as well as how history (regional, national, and worldwide) intertwines with the development of the Priorat region. The wine and oil tasting was also great and of high quality. And the location is absolutely beautiful! Highly recommend!
