McHenry Hohnen winery: site expressive wines
McHenry Hohnen winery is a family venture for brother-in-laws Murray McHenry and David Hohnen which was founded in 2004. Murray is the accomplished fine wine retailer while David is a winemaking pioneer, both their winemaking experience dates back to the early 70’s. In the three unique family vineyards (Burnside, Calgardup and Hazel’s), they have adopted biodynamic and organic farming techniques to produce site expressive wines. The evolving soil quality reflects on the wines and gives it individuality. Along with Murray, the core team comprises of Head Winemaker, Jacopo Dalli Cani and Viticulturalist, Mike Sleegers.
Following sustainable principles
The vineyard is treated with minimal intervention, where wild yeast, minimal sulphur, no filtration, large format oak and concrete fermenters have integral roles in site reflected wines.
The team of the winery strives to develop their land as well as their winemaking process to produce better wines, believing that the best from them is yet to come
The vineyards are managed using a range of practices that are ecologically sound, economically viable as well as socially responsible. Instead of using chemical sprays, natural predators are used like insects, birds and bees. There is no use of pesticides or synthetic compounds in the vineyard. Cover crops are used to keep vines healthy and protect soil erosion. Composting with cattle manure is a practice done annually. The viticultural practices that are utilized are pruning, shoot thinning, leaf pulling, crop thinning and irrigation.
