Malbec de Lagrézette: A Legacy Since the 15th Century
The story of Château Lagrézette is deeply intertwined with the history of winemaking, with the first recorded harvest dating back to 1503. This winery has made Malbec its flagship grape, now the most widely produced variety on the estate. The Landiech terroir is exclusively dedicated to Malbec, having removed hybrid vines from its past. Today, the vineyard spans 90 hectares, divided into three distinct areas.
The Lagrézette Estate: A Historic Terroir in Caillac
Covering over 60 hectares, the Lagrézette vineyard consists of 85% Malbec, 13% Merlot, and 2% Tannat. The unique clay-limestone and siliceous soils contribute to the wines' robust flavors and authenticity. The vineyard is carefully tended through manual practices, ensuring that grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to preserve their aromas, which is essential for producing high-quality wines. This exceptional terroir features 12 contiguous plots of 20 hectares with five distinct soil types, creating optimal conditions for Malbec maturation, including low frost and high temperatures.
The Harvest at Chateau Lagrezette
Malbec requires meticulous care to showcase its true character. To prevent overly humid conditions, the vineyard rows are spaced for proper ventilation, and regular hand stripping is performed. The delicate skin of the Malbec grape necessitates careful hand-harvesting in October, often later than other vineyards. To maintain freshness and prevent oxidation, white wines and rosés are harvested during the cooler hours of the night or early morning. After harvesting, grapes are manually sorted, destemmed, and crushed to ensure quality.
The Cellar and Vineyard: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Chateau Lagrezette holds planting rights for 3.5 hectares, including 2.7 hectares of exceptional terroir surrounding the Pigeonnier, which produces an award-winning wine frequently praised by American critics, achieving scores of 98/100. The subterranean cellar, designed to be free from noise and vibrations, provides an ideal environment for wine aging, shielded from sunlight, temperature fluctuations, and other disturbances.
