Experience the rich heritage and modern practices of Domaine Viviers in Burgundy, France.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in the 12th century, the vineyard at Domaine Du Chateau De Viviers boasts nearly 800 years of history. Initially established by Benedictine and later Cistercian monks, the estate was known for its abundant springs and a fishpond that provided sustenance during the Middle Ages. In 1399, the influential Budé family acquired the vineyard, transforming it into a stronghold and the base for the royal cupbearer's office, ‘Echanson du Roy’, which supplied wines for the royal court.
This prestigious office remained linked to the castle until the French Revolution, with wines from Viviers gracing the tables at Versailles during the weddings of Louis XIV and Louis XV. The current classical facade was completed in 1628, and its owner, Chevalier Deka de La Galle, was honored with the title of Marquis of Viviers for his loyal service to Queen Anne d'Autriche.
However, the arrival of Phylloxera in the early 20th century devastated the vineyards, leading to the sale of the estate by the financially troubled Marquis de Traynel. In 1978, Bernard and Brigitte Lefébure revitalized the chateau, setting the stage for its modern renaissance.
Arnould and Isabelle's Vision for Domaine Viviers
In 2015, Arnould, a marine biologist, and Isabelle, an interior architect, took the reins of the estate. They dedicated themselves to studying Burgundy's wine culture and sought inspiration from renowned wine regions worldwide, including Sonoma Valley, Bordeaux, and the Rhine. By October 2019, they had reestablished Domaine Viviers, focusing on the unique terroirs enriched by ancient sea fossils, such as ammonites and Ostrea virgula, from the Kimmeridgian geological layer.
Arnould's commitment to sustainability led to the estate's conversion to organic farming and the implementation of biodynamic practices, reflecting his passion for nature and environmental stewardship.
Integrating Ecosystems for Sustainable Vineyards
Biodiversity is a cornerstone of Domaine Viviers' philosophy. The estate thrives on a holistic approach, where vineyards coexist with woodlands and ecological areas rich in flora and fauna. By avoiding inorganic products and insecticides, the estate relies on natural processes to maintain soil health. Initiatives like beehives and nesting boxes enhance the ecosystem, enriching the vineyards and supporting the exceptional terroirs of Viviers. Isabelle complements this vision by offering luxury guest accommodations and promoting an artful lifestyle through bespoke textiles and creative tableware.
