Urlar Winery – Biodynamic Winemaking in True Balance
The name Urlar comes from the Gaelic word for “the Earth”. This is the center of their winemaking philosophy, all is in balance, all is connected at Urlar Winery. Throughout New Zealand, several small boutique wineries create handcrafted premium wines and Urlar is one of these companies. Located in the Gladstone subregion of Wairarapa, one can reach the estate with a stunning drive through the local wildlife of the Rimutaka Mountains. New Zealand has a small winemaking history, but its wines consistently win awards and honors internationally.
Urlar Winery was certified BioGro in 2010, as they utilize biodynamic practices in their vineyards to protect the balance of nature and the health of their vineyards.
Belief in People, Soil, Climate, and Cycles at the Winery
Their single vineyard site is represented over an area of 31 hectares with around 100,000 vines. In 2010, Urlar was certified BioGro, as they utilize biodynamic practices in their vineyards to protect the balance of nature and the health of their vineyards. Inter-row crop rotation maintains the health of the soils and helps reduce unwanted pests and insects. There is a total belief by the team in the people, soil, climate, and cycles that push them to grow quality grapes and produce excellent wines. Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Riesling are the heart of Urlar.
Production with Modern Technology and the Best Winemaking Equipment
At Urlar Winery, production takes place using modern technology and the best equipment. The temperature inside the building is constant and purposefully maintained to keep the wines cool. The location of the winery is next to a large river dam which creates a natural habitat for many unique birds and animals, enhancing the beauty of your winery experience at Urlar.
